Kramer holds a double major at Stockton in Political Science with a concentration in International Affairs and Language and Cultural Studies. she is also pursuing a minor in global studies. According to the article, this has led to “a centralization of resources so extensive that nearly all contemporary bitcoin addresses can be connected to these principal agents by a chain of six transactions.”

The University of Calgary PhD student, who always wanted to work in healthcare, found her calling after earning her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, with a major in biomedical engineering.

Her research focuses on stem cell bioprocessing, which she says has major implications for helping people with diseases such as diabetes and osteoarthritis by allowing scientists to fine-tune how they control cells for a safe and effective treatment.

An article related to this topic, of which she was the lead author, was recently named the 2022 winner of The award for the best graduate student paper published in the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering. The paper was a collaboration between his lab and a Southern California biotech company called PBS Biotech.

Dang’s co-authors on the award-winning paper with ties to UCalgary were Dr. Breanna S. Dang’s article was first published by the CJCE in July 2021 – an achievement on its own merits.

“I was so excited when it was accepted for publication,” says the Schulich School of Engineering alumnus, BSc (Eng)’20. “I considered that was already a huge win because we really wanted to show how traditional (engineering) principles could be applied to a field like stem cell manufacturing.”

Dang admits that she didn’t expect to win the prize because writing the paper was difficult and the reviewers asked many difficult questions.

“I was completely, genuinely shocked and so excited,” she says. “I actually had to forward the email to my supervisor to confirm it because I couldn’t believe it.”

Realize your potential

Dang’s research paper focused on using a traditional engineering tool, computational fluid dynamics modeling, to better understand how the geometry of a vertical wheel bioreactor affects growth and global behavior of stem cells.

“One of the biggest challenges is translating laboratory protocols into large-scale manufacturing to meet the demand for cell numbers,” Dang says. “While it may seem simple to translate these protocols from bench to bedside, there are many interrelated factors that require engineering knowledge to understand.”

Not only did the award validate her article, but Dang thinks it also shows that she is on the right track when it comes to her passion.

She is no stranger to accolades, having received the Rona Hatt Chemical Engineering Leadership Award, the TENET Medical Engineering Scholarship and the Alberta Graduate Achievement Scholarship. She says:

I think the best way to improve the health system is through interdisciplinary research, because it brings innovation. It allows you to work with a wide range of experts, including doctors, clinicians, stem cell biologists and engineers, to push the boundaries of this field.

As she studies for her candidacy exams, Dang is also working at UCalgary’s Center for Pharmaceutical Production Research, finalizing a few projects in hopes of publishing her findings within the next year.

She says both projects aim to better understand the interplay between biological factors and the bioreactor environment, and how this relationship affects the large-scale biomanufacturing of human-induced pluripotent stem cells.

“My goal is to continue to learn as much as possible from my mentors and lab colleagues,” says Dang. “Ultimately, I hope to use my degree to change the landscape of biomanufacturing and bioprocessing in Canada and make Calgary home to many companies in this space.”

Abstract

On March 29, 2022, the first workshop on “Issues Surrounding Price Developments During the COVID-19 Pandemic”, titled “Characteristics of Price Developments in Japan”, was held at the Bank’s Head Office from Japan. Starting from the differences in consumer price developments between Japan, the United States and Europe following the COVID-19 pandemic, a lively discussion took place on the characteristics of the price developments in Japan, involving experts and academics in economics and empirical analysis.

Session 1 focused on the characteristics of lower consumer price inflation in Japan as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the United States and Europe, based on the results of an analysis using the distribution of price changes and underlying inflation indicators. Moreover, on the basis of empirical results showing that in Japan the interaction between wages and prices is weak, discussions have taken place on the link between the two, which is considered important in terms of the sustainability of inflation. In Session 2, service prices, which are one of the reasons for the differences in consumer price developments in Japan, the United States and Europe, were highlighted and measurement issues prices of services, in particular rents, were discussed. It has been pointed out that the measurement approach used can have a significant impact on the measured difference in the rate of inflation between Japan and other countries as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Session 3 consisted of a panel discussion focusing on three main questions: (1) the reason for the differences in consumer price developments between Japan, the United States and Europe; (2) the outlook for future prices; and (3) monetary policy challenges based on the current price situation and outlook. Regarding (1), panelists generally agreed that the main reasons for the acceleration of inflation in the United States include the strong recovery in demand and the decline in the labor force participation rate; on the other hand, no similar development was observed in Japan, so that consumer price inflation in Japan remained low compared to the United States. With regard to (2), it was pointed out that, on the one hand, Japan faced the risk of a further decline in prices due to chronic deflationary factors in place since before the pandemic and the decline in demand caused by the prolonged impact of COVID-19; on the other hand, there is also the risk of a rise in inflation with the cost-push shock triggered by the sharp rise in commodity prices. It was then pointed out that the key factor in determining which risk is most likely to materialize is future wage developments. Regarding (3), the panelists shared the view that it is desirable to continue monetary easing in response to weak demand, while it is desirable to respond to price increases of certain items, notably l energy, through measures other than monetary policy.

The suggestion came from research conducted in collaboration with international scientists using the data for 15 years from 2000 to 2015. The study report suggested the need for green domestic policy as well as foreign direct investment to improve energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector.


The study focused on the use of adopted technology, the link between taxation and energy efficiency to promote renewable energy, and credit or tax exemption for companies improving energy efficiency.

The researchers also estimated that participation in export and foreign direct investment will contribute to energy efficiency and improve the economic conditions of the country as such.

Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras, Santosh Kumar Sahu led the research team at IIT Madras. Dr. Ajay Kumar from Emylon Business School, France, and Kim Hua Tan from Nottingham University Business School, UK were the foreign collaborators.

The research team said the study was primarily aimed at determining whether it was right to levy more taxes on businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Chennai, May 14 (IANS) Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have proposed environmental regulations to increase energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector.

The suggestion came from research conducted in collaboration with international scientists using the data for 15 years from 2000 to 2015. The study report suggested the need for green domestic policy as well as foreign direct investment to improve energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector.

The study focused on the use of adopted technology, the link between taxation and energy efficiency to promote renewable energy, and credit or tax exemption for companies improving energy efficiency.

The researchers also estimated that participation in export and foreign direct investment will contribute to energy efficiency and improve the economic conditions of the country as such.

Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras, Santosh Kumar Sahu led the research team at IIT Madras. Dr. Ajay Kumar from Emylon Business School, France, and Kim Hua Tan from Nottingham University Business School, UK were the foreign collaborators.

The research team said the study was primarily aimed at determining whether it was right to levy more taxes on businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A research paper co-authored by City, University of London Software Reliability Scholar Dr. Martin Nyx Brain, Department of Computing, won the award for Best Tool Paper at the recent Joint European Conference on Software Theory and Practice (ETAPS).

The article, cvc5: A Versatile and Industrial-Strength SMT Solver, introduces cvc5, a software verification tool and method to mathematically prove that software does not crash and is bug-free before testing. It emerges from the work he and his international team of colleagues have conducted to develop the next generation of tools for solving a series of ‘logic puzzles’ or equations.

However, the risk comes into play if the software is faulty or insecure – which can put people’s lives at risk and cause serious damage to the environment.

The City’s Center for Software Reliability has, over the years, developed and worked with industry to use a variety of different tools, methods, and techniques to make critical infrastructure software safer, more secure, and more robust. .

“One of these layers of defense is software verification; tools and methods to mathematically prove that software will not crash and is bug-free before being tested. The software is reduced to a series of “logical puzzles” or equations. If there are solutions to the equations, the software may crash or be hacked. If there are no solutions, the system is safe. This is a powerful technique, but it requires a fast way to solve the millions or billions of equations generated by typical industrial control software,” adds Dr. Brain.

Tam Nguyen, CISSP and researcher at the University of Arizona, published a new research paper in JMIR publications: “Toward Human Digital Twins for Cybersecurity Simulations on the Metaverse: Ontological and Network Science Approach”.

The technological revolution has familiarized the world with a new concept: the Metaverse. The Metaverse is a massive unified digital realm created from virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, social media, cloud infrastructure, 3D networks, and more. simulating the real world. With this growing digital universe, cybersecurity becomes even more important. Currently, cyber defense strategies are still reactive and slow; while it usually only takes pirates 15 hours to break through the defence, defenders take 200 to 300 days to discover a breach. In his article, Nguyen suggests expanding the scope of digital twins (DTs) and human digital twins (HDTs) in the metaverse for cybersecurity defense purposes.

DTs are virtual models designed to accurately mirror physical objects such as routers, servers, IoT systems. HDTs are a specialized form of DTs that can act as system users, system administrators, and malicious agents. Because HDTs are completely autonomous, they can interact with other HDTs and DTs. Therefore, complex cybersecurity simulations can be played in secure sections of the metaverse. The key is to build realistic human digital twins who can think and act like real hackers/defenders.

Nguyen’s recently published paper in JMIR presents a conceptual framework for running massive cybersecurity simulations on the metaverse with HDTs. The framework is based on a new cybersecurity behavioral ontology or “Cybonto”, which aims to improve the cognitive systems of human digital twins. At the heart of Cybonto is a collection of 108 psychological constructs and thousands of related paths based on 20 proven psychological theories. HDT design teams can implement Cybonto so that their HDTs can realistically mimic the thought processes and behaviors of system users, system administrators, and even malicious agents. Challenging cybersecurity scenarios can then be simulated 24/7 on secure sections of the metaverse. Simulated results can provide insight into complex interdependent networks of systems, users, administrators, and hackers. This information will lead to more proactive and effective cybersecurity strategies.

Cybonto is versatile. It can be used for other purposes such as manual analysis of hacker behaviors and automatic analysis of behavioral cybersecurity knowledge texts. Cybonto may also find uses beyond medical cybersecurity for applied psychology training, automatic analysis of electronic health records, and virtual community psychology experiences.
