How to Write a Research Paper – A Guide for Students

Preparation for writing a research article

Usually, the purpose of a research article is known before you write it. It can be formulated as a research article question, a thesis presentation or the statement of a hypothesis.

Structure of a research article

The structure of a research article may seem very rigid, but it has a purpose: it will make it easier for you to find the information you are looking for, and it will also help structure your thinking and communication.

Generally, an empirical document has the following structure:

  • Title
  • Synopsis
  • introduction
  • Methodology
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • conclusion
  • The references

Other parts of certain academic documents

The following parts may be acceptable for inclusion in some scientific standards, but may not be acceptable for others.

Table of contents (usually placed just before or immediately after the synopsis).

Acknowledgments (sometimes placed before the synopsis and sometimes at the end of the document).

Appendices (location: after all other parts).

Other technical issues

When writing articles, we were surprised at the number of students who struggle with in-text quotes. While the rules are somewhat different, in-text quotes shouldn’t be that hard to master. Generally, authors wish to include tables and figures in the text.

Sometimes the format or standard prohibits authors from including tables and figures directly in the text (wherever they want). Sometimes they should be included at the end of the main text.

Publish articles

Publishing your article can be a very time consuming process.

After writing the academic paper, the researchers send it to a magazine. They usually start with the most respected magazine and move down the list, until a magazine accepts the article.

Scientific journals use a peer review process, which consists of a group of researchers (probably from the same field) who review the work to ensure the quality of the article.

Publication bias is a well-known phenomenon and occurs when the peer review process often rejects “no results”. Rejecting a journal does not necessarily mean that you do not have the option of resubmitting the article to the journal.
